July Fourth festivities should always end with a bang, but that's only one hour out of 24. The Fredericksburg Heritage Festival aims to fill the rest of your Independence Day with activities highlighting the history and creativity of our community.
Some of the events are tried and true: the five-mile race, the parade, live music, the river raft race and the craft show. Other offerings are being expanded or updated.
This year, the Stafford Classic Car Club has decided to forgo a traditional car show in favor of an automobile display. The cars will be showcased during the Festival of the Streets from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Forty-five vehicles will represent more than 60 years of history on wheels, from a 1915 Ford Model T police car to a late-model Ford GT.
The cars come from all over the region, but most of them are from Stafford.
"We decided to tie into the 'heritage' part of the festival," car club president Brent McConnell said. "We've chosen high-quality vehicles and put together a display that allows people to walk through the history of the automobile in America."
McConnell said fans of scorching summer horsepower can still expect an impressive array of polished hotrods and muscle cars, but they will be put into historical context in a sort of vehicular timeline.
"We want to use cars that best represent the period they came from," he said.
